The Church and Salemi the inhabitants to have served in church
By following the few historical sources, I wanted to present some famous fellow citizens who have served the Church, assuming an ecclesial a certain value outside the city limits and Sicily.
The city of Salem has had a number of important religious and diocesan priests and the whole church. She is a mother of many children who are dedicated only to the Church, we do not list the various religious and priests who gave this land but inhabitants to carry only those that are known in Sicily and Italy for their work to the gospel.
Salemi most likely from the fourth century. Christianity was introduced to the AD (Witness the early Christian Basilica of S. Miceli), the Arab domination had to destroy the Christianity of ancient times. With the Normans around 1070, the Christian religion back to have a central place in this land. From mosque to go to church, in 1290 he was elected Patron Saint Nicola in 1340 and is dedicated to the Mother Church of the city. Since then, many inhabitants to have chosen to follow Christ, some have lived in silence and seclusion of this earth, and other services have become important tasks for the whole Church of that time.
By Julian Falciglia (1500) begins this historical journey that wants to show to all the inhabitants to, those of its famous citizens. The path term Calogero Peri (2010), Salemi last to be considered famous in the history of the city. Elected Bishop divine the fifth and third cappuccino of Salemi in assumenre service as Pastor of the Church.

The Holy Father Benedict XVI on January 30th of 2010 he was appointed Bishop for the Church of Caltagirone. After 75 years, this city gives another fellow bishop of the church. In the history of Salem there are at least five bishops, including three cappuccinos, the last of these Calogero Peri.
Francis Passalaqua : Born in Salem in 1638,
becomes more strict observance of Friar St. Francis, taught religion in the convent of S. Mary of Jesus of Palermo. He was elected Vice confessor of the ruler of Sicily (Peter Colon Duke of Veraguas). However, requests to be sent on a mission to leave Sicily and awarded the post of Commissioner Apostolic is sent on missions in Egypt and nell'Etiopia. He became a subject of interest to the Holy See, his fame reached the ears of Pope Innocent XI appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to the reconciliation of the Roman and Alexandrian church. He translated into Arabic the Council of Chalcedon. Pope Innocent XII sent him to the Emperor of Abyssinia as a missionary, but the journey becomes ill and dies in the city of Sellek 4 August 1701.
Praise secure place under his portrait in the convent of S. Antonio Palermo "Venerabilis Servus Dei P. Franciscus Passalacqua a Salem strictioris observantiae S. Francisci, Panormitane Pronvinciae filius, missionarius apostolicus ad infedele missus, multos ad Christi fidem perduxit. Pro concilianda Alexandrina cum Romanae Ecclesiae ad Patriarcham gentis illius ad Innoccetio XI nuncius missus, latore prurimos ac arumnas in itinere tulit, inique concilium Calcedonense in arabicum traduxit, et Romae in lucem dedit. Dignitatem Episcopalem respuit: tandem ad Innoccentio XII ad imperatorem Bissinum oblegatus in civitate Sellekiae in gravem morbum incidit, et diem mortis suae praedicens, meritis plenus animam Deo redditi die IV augusti an. 1701 aetatis suae 63 religionis vero 38”.
Giovanni Antonio Brandi : Brother of the Third Order of St. Francis, Pope Clement VIII sent him to work for the reconciliation of the Venetian church then prohibited, with the Roman one. He refused all honors them suggested that the Supreme Pontiff, and chose a solitary life in his cell between prayer and study. He wrote poems which were greatly admired by poets of the 500, as "the rosary of Mary." Written in to the sacred and heroic. He wrote the opera "The trick gave the very clear Venetian lady," "Life and death of S. Filippo D'Argirò. He died May 13, 1608, buried in the church of S. Cosma and Damian in Rome.
Giuliano Falciglia : Augustine, studied in Siena in 1422, became Doctor of Theology is sent as regent of Rimini and later as a member of the General Council during the Basel, with the rank of Deputy Attorney. He was elected vicar general in the Roman Curia, in 1433 the Dean and Chapter of the Rhine province Sveva. Finally becomes General of the whole order of the Augustinians. Worked for the canonization of Nicholas of Tolentino. He wrote several philosophical treatises. He died at Messina in May 20, 1459, is buried in the convent of S. Augustine to Messina.
Giuseppe Maria Mistretta : born in 1777, Father Joseph Fight (Visitor of Sicily, Malta and Gozo) chose him as a companion to combat heresies in France that turned the time. Augustine becomes, many chairs refused and preferred to teach the doctrine of his fellow citizens, but is called by King Ferdinand I Gervasi and appointed Chaplain Major. He was appointed General of the Augustinian order. At the age of 65 he left Rome and returned to Salem and is dedicated to the Augustinian convent. He died October 13, 1831, buried in the convent S. Augustine in Salemi.
Giuseppe Maria Maragioglio : was born May 17, 1811. He was bishop of Patti from the death occurred March 15, 1875 January 20, 1888.
Joseph Palermo : born in 1801, took the habit in 1818 Augustine in Rome, made his studies Corneto Viterbo, Perugia and Rome. He was regent of studies generalize Naples and Rome. Master of Sacred Theology, excellent teacher and preacher. The Order was secretary general, assistant general attorney general and general father. Consultor of the Congregations of the Holy Office and of Rites. He was appointed bishop by Pope Pius IX with the title of sacristan and vicar of Vatican City. For his eminent theological culture Pius IX called him to be part of the various commissions investigating the issue to the immaculate conception of Mary in view of the proclamation of the Dogma. Together with Father Perrone - Jesuit - refuted the vote of De Ferrari along with Cossa had expressed only in the last commission charged by the Holy Father, voted against the definition. " He was elected titular bishop of Porphyry in 1855, replaced by a vicar-general elected by the base. His funeral was celebrated at Pesaro in the church of the Augustinian Fathers January 27, 1857.
Lorenzo James English : born July 22, 1884, was elected bishop of Crete, Greece, and was consecrated April 15, 1934, for denying But the government was transferred to the headquarters of Anglona Tursi-May 5, 1935 where he remained until September 12, 1945, gave up and was appointed titular bishop of Nilopoli, died January 19, 1951.
Santoro Sheen: Born in 1554, the Third Order Franciscan friar, died May 1, 1641. founded in Rome the monastery of St. Paul's rule. Also became Vicar General of the order.
Father Adam Giuliano : Jesuit, died in his preaching of the gospel in eastern India in 1623.
