Lent is a time of preparation for the Passover of the Lord. Easter is man's salvation is a gift to humanity, it is therefore necessary that our life is prepared to accept this gift. The Lenten season is favorable opportunity that we are given every year to change our lives which is often enslaved by sin and therefore marked by sadness and death. At this time, the Church invites Christians to practice the works of fasting, prayer and listening to the Gospel. These practices are useful and necessary to all those who want to feel free from sin, to live in joy and serenity. By fasting, Christians do not mortify the body, but remember that their body is more than just instinct. Fasting , which must be practiced on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, is limited to essential food. In every Friday during Lent we abstain from meat. Along with the need to act fast is prayer, without it our fast losing its sense of purification. Listening to the Word of God , the Gospel, especially in the liturgy for Sundays of Lent, it must be for all Christians when true encounter with the Lord. During the period of Lent remember to make acts of charity towards the suffering and offers alms to the poor who are on the right and we often forget or avoid. Over the past and those who suffer to manifest the presence of the Lord.

A phase remains on the most recent phase of the church are very scarce. The most interesting element is composed of a mosaic fragment found in the eastern half of the nave bearing the Latin inscription "... ... MPORIBUS NTIFICIS Patris Bishops' ... OMINUS ... DO ... NORIS ... F. .. Ioli ... EC ...". The epitaph contains perhaps the allusion to a [p] ontificis Bishops' patris [opi]. Based on the design of the building the Peace attributed this phase to the sixth century. B dCFase This second time the basilica is characterized by another mosaic floor that was discovered beneath the mosaic with the inscription in Latin: it is characterized in its western half by a geometric pattern of squares and octagons containing stylized floral motifs and in his mid- Eastern irregular quadrilaterals interspersed with diamonds, this part of the mosaic floor is also home to five entries, four of which bear Greek and Latin names of likely benefactors of the church and Kobouldeos Maxima, Zosimos, Saprikios, Makarios and Dionisius.Sulla first inscription reads "Kobouldeos Maxima split the vote and for the salvation of their children." Particularly interesting is the name Kobouldeos widespread in the Christian communities of North Africa and means "Quod Deus vult". This in my opinion shows that African teams in the late Roman era were still present in the western part of the island and that probably contributed to the spread of Christianity in these zone.La second inscription reads "The priest Macarius for the salvation of Kobouldeos. The type of inclusion appears to be a funeral but the loss of stratigraphic data can not be say this with certainty. This fragment of mosaic and refers to the restoration work, the latter, according to Pace, it could be referred either to the tomb of Kobouldeos built by the priest or to a restoration of Makarios wanted by Macario floor to honor the memory of the founder of the basilica (Kobouldeos? ). In the third inscription reads, "Remember, O Lord, your servant saprice" The name of this nell'epitaffio comes from greek "sapròs" "putrid" and is a rather common name among the early Christians who used it for humility derogatory names. According to the Peace that this inscription is that of Zosimos were funerary in nature while the Salinas were invocations the community. To me, the first hypothesis is more likely, because the text seems to speak of a clear desire by the faithful to rely on the verge of death at the hands of Dio.L 'unique funerary inscription is certain to Dionisius that says "The priest lived Dionisio 55 years in peace. "This second phase is due to the fifth century. dCSia the combination of mosaics and funerary inscriptions and the names are found in inscriptions from North Africa. The quality of the lower level floor of the basilica of Salemi, however, betrays a bill that made use of local African models circulating at that time in the western Mediterranean. Bishop's Message for Lent 2011

L ' meeting of Jesus with the Samaritan woman is accompanying the journey of our church ministry this year. Meditating on the next event on the third Sunday of Lent, we will also show us the Lord the desire of the 'water welling up to eternal life "(Jn 4.14) and draw to the hope that shines on his face transfigured, covered in the gospel of the second Sunday.
The times we are living puts a strain on our faith, because it contains few signs of light and many shadows of the crisis. It seems as if, suddenly, has failed in all the security you the last decades we have put in the resources and intellectual achievements human. We find ourselves helpless and fragile, beset by anxiety and fear, uncertain about what the future may hold, weighed down by a solitude that is not relieved by the many people we touch.
seems almost a cliché, but it is a beautiful truth, the claim that their Lent can help us find the right not to crush us by our surroundings and make sense of liberating the present tribulation. This sacred time, in fact, gives us the opportunity to restore order in our lives through listening to the Word of God, prayer and penance, led by the Spirit, as Jesus "was led by Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil "(Mt 4.1). We need to return to ourselves, to stand before Jesus as the Samaritan woman at the well, to feel that he reveal all our sins to be forgiven by him and continue to follow him as faithful disciples. In his spiritual testament Shahbaz Bhatti, a Catholic minister for minorities of Pakistan, assassinated on March 2 last year in Islamabad, wrote: "I want my life, my character, my actions speak for me and say that I am following Jesus Christ. [...] Long as I live, until my last breath, I will continue to serve Jesus and this poor, suffering humanity, Christians, the needy, the poor. " This is the message that comes from a witness, that he understood the meaning of the words of St. Paul: "To me [...] to live is Christ and to die is gain" (Phil. 1.21).
This goal, however, is not achieved through shortcuts, but only by taking the cross daily and follow Christ (cf. Lk 9.23), especially during Lent, Easter itinerary that, discounting our baptism makes us died to sin once again to rise to new life in the Risen Lord.
Let, therefore, in the path, following the exhortation of the liturgy: "Be frugal and thrifty the table, the language is simple and heart, brothers, it's time to listen to the voice of the Spirit "(Office of Readings Hymn ). Specifically, each covering a bit 'of his time to continue reading a book of the Old or New Testament; accompany the reading with personal prayer, save money, removing it from its table and giving it to those in need because poor are always at our side. It would be very significant if each family together with the Word, in prayer and in preparation of the gifts of charity, experiencing, as well, the joy of being a domestic Church, supportive and welcoming.
good Lent.

The ancient cathedral Salemi

Introduction:

In the highest part of Salemi, which constitutes the acropolis town, there was the Mother Church and according to sources at that site was a temple dedicated to Venus and after that an Arab mosque. In this square stands a majestic castle built by King Frederick II and the region, which stood the church, was nothing but a plot of the castle, in fact the steeple of this church at one time is nothing but a tower of guard, the position of construction is not in harmony with the global church and has nothing to do with a bell tower. It is thought that in this area of \u200b\u200bthe castle, at the same site, a place of worship was to be built for the court and in various denominations, the city has suffered, most likely each raised his holy place, as the mosque during the Arab domination and a small chapel in Christianity, but there is no news on the existence of this small church, handed down by oral tradition that was to be dedicated to Our Lady.
The earthquake of 1968 damaged the structure of the Church, but the hand of man has decided not to intervene to restore order to continue, but preferred to destroy and annihilate.

History and description:

Under the Deanship of Don Francesco Di Blasi (1615) who was the promoter of the building but due to subsequent Archpriests Grillo, and Cortese Villaragur The ancient church was destroyed and precendete under the direction of Mariano Smiriglio was designed the new church.
The Church has three ports of entry, with three aisles, surmounted by three large windows. The plant has a Latin cross with a large transept, the aisles are divided by 6 columns of pearly marble block order with Tuscan capitals sorregono wide round arches, it seems that these columns were made at Trapani Francesco Lo Mastro. The central apse was raised about three feet from the floor and is accessed by a marble staircase, the two side apses were lower. The altars run along the side aisles and transepts, and were raised by two steps.
the south aisle was the first altar dedicated to St. Vincent Ferrer, there is no news of how it was structured, the second was dedicated to St. Giuliano guests, a marble statue that belonged to an old church dedicated to him that he was in Via Francesco Crispi. This statue is by Domenico Gagini but some attribute it to Francesco Laurana is now preserved in the museum of sacred art. The third altar was S. Lorenzo, had set up a canvas where they were represented, in addition to the saint, the Holy Family and Santa Rosalia, the picture is attribute to Giacinto Calamonaci. In this third altar there was also a painting of St. Andrew. These paintings are now in our hands of the Superintendent.
Following this third altar there was a side entrance door, to follow there was the altar of St. John the Evangelist, a large painting by Peter Bonaccorso, including this altar and the door there was water santiera.
the left side, the first altar at the bottom there was a large baptismal font by Domenico Gagini the second altar was one of Madonna delle Grazie, a statue in polychrome terracotta always Domenico Gagini. The next altar of St. Peter, a painting depicting St. Peter and St. Paul, to follow there was a large room where the chairs and benches were placed, followed by stood the great chapel of the Immaculate, was closed by gates, inside there was a chorus wood, the walls were full of fillers like the rest of the whole church was full. In front of this altar was placed in the body and pillar of the nave of the Left there was addosato the pulpit of walnut wood came from the hands of Rastrelli, who also commissioned the choir altar.
The transept the left side there was an altar with a marble statue of Our Lady of Candlemas, perhaps attributed to Gagini. On the other hand, the altar with a crucifix with the foot statues of Our Lady and St John, the authoring of this crucifix was having the benefits of the Sac. Francesco Palermo who was buried at the foot of this altar. The altar has a shrine with a large urn containing the body of S. M. Felice, yet there was room in a crib in polychrome.
The church floor was white marble, the center had abiside also raised the high altar, with a large coro.L 'altar was composed of a' shrine full of fillers, in contained the picture of Our Lady of the Angels created by Mariano Smiriglio, until 1341 the church was dedicated to the Madonna with the election then the titles of the patron saint way to St. Nicholas. The right-hand altar contains a painting of the sacred heart of Jesus with a baroque frame, this altar was called the Blessed Sacrament, to the sides of this altar, there were two paintings, one depicting the Last Supper and the other the tree of life paintings of atheism Salemi Ignazio Di Miceli, now those are located on either side of the main altar in the church. The altar was left of the Patron, S. Nicola di Bari, contained a marble statue of the saint sitting and blessing, the sides were placed two pictures of St. Nicholas Di Miceli made by the artist, now placed in the church.

Dome before and after the earthquake - the earthquake and man:
The '68 earthquake caused structural damage and destruction of the walls of sofitto (part), but the man then instead of ensure the protection destroyed the right side that was not damaged and the title would be wise to shore up the peace and decide to do things of this sacred place.
The interior abbe the collapse of the external buttresses and part of the roof. The central apse is still intact and everything in it was completely immune from the earthquake but because everything was left without cover, winter with its rains caused minor damage to works of art. The transept was intact only the altar of the damage was crucified for the rest of the fall of the roof of the chapel was left without any damage. The Chapel of dell'immacolta suffered light damage to respect the shrine that he kept the statue of the Madonna, and the whole church with its chapels remained intact, the quake causes only loss of the faces and the roof.
Instead of safeguarding the art that after this earthquake was the prey of jackals and many speculators, it was decided to only think of that dirt that was extracted from the gain distruzione.La fault was that of all the ecclesiastical curia, the civil authorities, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Salemi people who did not move against the ignorance of the destruction.
Now this ancient remains only a broad array of sacred remains presiozi stucco, remains standing in the apse and side chapels and the left side, all these ruins will certainly give an artist's impression of the square that with the castle is a beauty but they remain high as a symbol of labor that art and tradizionone Salemi had to suffer through no fault of nature but for some men.
